Choosing the Right Sunblock

Keeping healthy radiant skin during the summer doesn’t have to be hard work. With the right tips from salon experts, you can be on your way to healthy skin in no time. The number one tip skin care experts give out this time of year is about the importance of sunblock.

Any esthetician will tell you sunblock is the number one tool needed to keep skin at its best. But if you’ve taken a spin down the sunblock aisle lately, you know there are a lot of options. Spray sunblock or lotion? SPF 30 or 45? The options are endless. Here are a few tips from skin care experts to add the right sunblock to your beauty routine.

  • SPF 30 or higher. SPF stands for sun protection factor, which is a measure of how well the sunscreen deflects UVB rays. Some experts say the higher the SPF the better, but there is much debate about this topic. As long as the sunblock is SPF 30 or above and is applied often, it will work perfectly.

  • Broad-spectrum coverage. A good sunscreen will offer broad-spectrum coverage, which means it will protect against both UVB and UV rays. They are both harmful to the skin, so having broad-spectrum coverage is a must.

  • Spray or lotion? This is all about personal preference. It doesn’t matter how sunblock is applied, just that it is applied. If spray sunblock is easier, go for it. Be careful though, applying spray sunblock outdoors where the wind can blow the mist around could mean a blotchy burn.

  • Don’t forget to reapply. Skin care experts say many people forget to reapply sunblock. Every few hours a fresh coat of sunblock should be added to the skin. This rule is especially important with children, who are typically in and out of the water and need more protection from the sun.
