Joy of Spa's Gift Certificate Guide

It’s easy to give a regular massage gift certificate, but why not be creative? SpaBoom’s staff shares their thoughts...

If you know the person’s preference, my tip would be to choose a more personal service such as a facial, manicure or pedicure.

If you don’t know the person very well it is best to go with a non-exotic treatment like a Swedish massage or a straightforward treatment.

Oh, and if you're buying a gift for a Mom to be...be sure there's a fun takeaway like a lovely lotion or potion for her - that mattered so much to me after babies - that pampering piece, the yummy smell that wasn't baby-based.

Buy for the occasion – if it’s a pregnant woman, a prenatal massage of some sort.

For someone getting married, maybe it’s to relieve stress or to give him or her a “glow” with an exfoliation or aromatherapy wrap. For the college graduation, it’s definitely a relaxation treatment.

I know Joy Of Spa is more geared to women but Kathleen's blog about the allergy massage really caught my attention. I would be a lot less anxious about going in to a spa for an "allergy massage" than a facial or pedicure.

I think a spa gift is an opportunity to sweep your recipient off her(his) feet. Even if she is a frequent spa-goer, buy something she would not do for herself. Even if it is not what she ultimately uses (most spas will redeem the GC for any treatment) your recipient will appreciate the thought...and that's what gifts are all about!

When my friend’s husband finally finished medical school in his 40ies, I gave HER the gift of a massage because she had basically put him through medical school and he was never home. She was pleasantly surprised!

Also, I frequently give a spa gift basket with lotion and goodies plus a service for a unique shower gift.

My brother just got married this past weekend. I gave him and my new sister-in-law a couple’s massage at a wonderful local destination spa. Now I need one (a massage that is!)

It is more personal to give a service versus just a dollar amount. However, that being said....I am big on researching spa products carried by my favorite spas. I match the products that I think will fit my friend’s needs best and then write in a recommendation on the dollar amount gift certificate. That way, my friends (who are short on time and long on kids) can just pop into the spa and use the certificate to buy the recommended products – like essential oils – and apply them at home.

Since they seem to have everything they want – or they just go buy it themselves...I give a spa gift certificate to my mother and mother-in-law every Christmas as an automatic de-stressor after the holiday madness. This is something they wouldn’t do for themselves; and it is an easy, stress-free gift for me to give as it requires little to no effort on my part!

Spa gift certificates are always a great choice for any gift recipient! Take a little time to consider the qualities of your intended giftee, and make their experience even more amazing!
