Summer Hair Trends
We polled some of our customers across the country to see what kinds of new hairstyles they were seeing out there. Here’s what’s hot:
Deborah Mohle, Spa Owner & Stylist at the Hair Studio Salon Spa in York, Pa
Remember when you snuck scissors and made your first cut much to your mother’s horror? Well now you know better...
We are seeing more texture out there and less 'bone straight' cuts. The look is messier, achieved through the cut or styling tools. Also, styles are shorter in back & longer in front with front bangs and longer side bangs.
Angie Elder, Owner of Melange Salon & Spa, Edmonton, AB Canada
Too bad for Katie Holmes and her buddy Victoria Beckham but long hair is back. Maybe Costco has a deal on bulk extensions?
For women, we are seeing more of messy undone sweeps, more volume, and soft curls with a 1940's wave. Also beach-y hair texture is still popular. The bob continues to be popular but with some new twists: disconnection and asymmetry. But the bob is over for the truly fashion forward. Long hair is back.
For Men, the schoolboy proper look with a classic part is in. Also, short sides and back with a longer side swept fringe. Or a new version of the classic 'Caesar cut' with a longer textured fringe. We are definitely seeing slicked back hair too.

Hollywood styles shine in Ohio...
The summer trends this year include wearing hair wavy or curly, soft and tussled, rather than super straight. Body waves and loose perms are back in style!
Braids have also made a come back, we have requests for small braids to be added to special occasion styles, similar to how the celebrities are wearing their hair in the summer magazines, i.e. Nicole Richie, Vanessa Hudgens and Hayden Panettierre.
Lastly, dark is the new light! Instead of the usual summer highlights, many of our clients are requesting to go a little darker for summer. Again, this follows the Hollywood trends, Rachel McAdams, on the current cover of Glamour with a chocolate brown bob, also, Fergie is wearing her hair dark brown. Seeing the celebrities change their hair dramatically inspires our clients to do the same!
Keri Burnett, Director of Operations at Gould Salon in Memphis, TN
Staying cool is key in the Southeast!
In general we are seeing the 'normal' summer trend of lighter & shorter to battle the summer heat & humidity. Or our clients are growing their hair out and wish for an easy style to put up. They also want to look like they’ve been out in the sun so lighter highlights brighten the hair without the burn of the summer sun.
Vanessa, Stylist at Mark Pardo in Albuquerque, NM
Women desire a sleeker, one-length cut and are wanting to grow out their angled bobs. On the other hand, some are going extreme with real short cuts. Go figure! Also highlights are very popular, especially natural, golden, sun-kissed look as opposed to the chunky/blocky darker colors.
Many of our male clients are asking for short on sides and back and more length in front.
Mario Ortiz, Owner & Stylist at Waves, Albuquerque, NM
More trends from the Southwest!
Long hair or medium length hair with texture and layers is in here at our salon. For color we are seeing a request for medium brown with lots of summer looking highlights.
For the men definitely medium length and messy.
Whether hair is dull, dry, thin or thick - everyone has a hair-concern... How do I keep my hair shiny and sexy? The summer hair trend at Serenity Salon and Spa is looking natural by showcasing sunkissed highlights to glisten the face. The clients love this look especially when the silky soft texture is enhanced with Bumble and Bumble's Shine spray.
