Decorating Tips to Turn Your Home Into a Warm Winter Nest

The leaves are changing and the mercury is dropping. We all know what that means: winter is just around the corner. As you swap your sandals for furry boots and your t-shirts for sweaters, consider swapping out a few other items in your home to create a warm environment for the chilly season ahead. Here are a few tips to create a toasty winter nest:

Pops of color
Prevent the winter doldrums by adding a splash of color to your living room. Pick up a few vibrant throw pillows and toss them on the couch. A brightly colored fleece blanket is also a cheery and snuggly addition. You can also dress up your windows with some funky colored curtains for a kick of color.

A book nook
Create a small nook in your home to relax. The idea is to create a comfy place to curl up in a thick sweater to do a little winter reading. Put a chaise lounge near a window and add a small bookcase. Or, slide your recliner near the fireplace. E-readers are nice, but during the winter a nice worn out copy of a classic will hit the spot. Consider making a winter reading list to work through over the next few months.

Utilize the light
The days will get shorter so be sure to capitalize on every once of sunlight by adding a large mirror to a wall near a window. This will reflect some of the light and fill your room with as much natural light as possible. You can also switch your light bulbs to daylight bulbs, which offer more natural light than the typical harsh yellow bulbs.

Switch up the bedding
Your wispy bedspread will have to go. You’ll want something a bit warmer, like a down blanket. Dress up your bedroom with some fuzzy pillows and a sheepskin rug. Having something warm and soft under your feet as soon as you wake up on a cold winter morning is always a plus.

Winter scents
Embrace winter by filling your living room with the scents of the season. A cinnamon scented candle would do the trick, or create a bowl of pine-scented potpourri and use it as a centerpiece on your kitchen table.

Plan gatherings
Don’t just change up your décor, change up your social schedule. With darkness settling in early, you’ll feel like there is only time enough in the day to go to work. The lack of sunlight can really dampen your mood. To keep yourself in good spirits, plan a few winter gatherings. Of course, the holidays are always a nice time to get together, but consider having other winter-themed parties. For example, have your friends over for some chili followed by a board game competition.

With a few simple adjustments to your home, winter won’t feel quite as long. A few nights cuddling with your loved one by the fire, a few nights sipping hot cocoa and before you know it, spring will arrive.
